During their reign of terror in Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge (1975-79) are believed to have killed at least 1.5 million Cambodians. From 1979 to 1989, the country fell under the control of a Soviet-backed Revolutionary party created by Vietnam. It wasn’t until the early 1990’s that Cambodia reached a UN supported independence. The country’s monarchy was restored and the first post-war elections were held in 1993.
