Own a quilt made by a Gee's Bend quilter—the most storied and artistic quilters in history in the country and the world.
This auction offers 16 “legacy quilts”, works created to honor those who shaped the artists' lives and art. Every quilt contains a story woven into the piece by the artist. Learn more about the story behind these quilts within the item's description.
Each quilter has donated their work to support the programming at the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy and many of the quilts include fabric discovered upon its reopening.
About The Freedom Quilting Bee
The Freedom Quilting Bee was a Black women's co-operative founded in 1966 by the women of Gee's Bend, Alberta, Alabama and surrounding communities. The “Bee” is where the manufactured quilt industry was born. Artists and fashion designers of the time were effusive in their praise of the beauty and artistry of the quilts made by these Black women sharecroppers. Diana Vreeland and Jackson Pollack were huge fans and collectors of their works. Renowned quilt artists Qunnie Pettway, Loretta Pettway Bennett, Rose Witherspoon Abrams and Marlene Bennett Jones are a few of the quilt artists who have designed and made the quilts offered here. The works of these quilt artists are permanently installed in museums throughout the United States and the world.
Funds raised are for the benefit of the Freedom Quilting Bee Legacy, a 501c3 non-profit, the successor organization of the original Freedom Quilting Bee. Visit our website at FQBLegacy.org to learn about the work, commitment and mission we have for the community.
