Maple Bowl

This spalted maple fruit bowl was made by wood turner Amy Rothberg, who teaches most of the lathe classes at Nova Labs.  Amy started turning wood when she was only fourteen.

Amy's pieces are of simple and elegant lines. To really experience them, it is necessary to caress their perfectly smooth surface.

This particular one is a "twice turned bowl." Soon after the tree was cut down,  the wet wood was "rough" turned and left to dry for about 4 years.  This allows the wood to dry uniformly and prevents cracking.  More recently, it was turned again to its final shape and thickness.  It was finished with La Tourangelle Roasted Walnut Oil,  a food-safe finish that also makes a great salad dressing.  Amy recommends to reapply the oil occasionally since the wood will dry out after repeated washing.  People who are allergic to walnut should not eat from this bowl.

Other work by Amy Rothberg is available at Handmade by LMAC, in the Dulles Town Center Mall.

In the decorative wood market, spalted wood is in high demand. Spalting is caused by certain fungi growing in the wood and creating zone lines that give the wood character.
