GOYESQUA #132 Painting by Anthony Greco

If you are lucky, you saw the striking Goyesqua #132 - Collateral Damage at the AYS PERFECT PAIRS performance on May 14. An acrylic on paper by AYS grandfather Anthony Greco, this 18x18in piece of nine panels was inspired by a trip to Greece.

Mr. Greco is happy to show you this work - please get in touch with AYS if you would like to visit his studio.

Mr. Greco states: This piece is from a series of paper works that are meant to echo, or in some way pay homage to, the dark, expressive and somewhat pessimistic late paintings of Goya. It is meant to prompt reflection on the military euphemism that implies a great difference between a target and unintended casualties. The patterns in this piece (and others in the series) are created by pressing damp paper onto surfaces that contain pebbles, beads, corrugated cardboard, or other objects, then "squeegee-ing" paint over the pressed paper.  Sometimes I "ink" the paper first with paint, then press into the surfaces.
Mr. Greco, both Academic Dean and a professor at Atlanta College of Art for 30 years, has shown works in galleries and solo and group exhibitions all over the United States. His works appear in corporate and private collections, including Bank of America, Coca-Cola U.S.A., King & Spalding, Chase Manhattan Bank, the Butler Museum of American Art, and the Jimmy Carter Presidential LIbrary. He holds a Master of Fine Art in Painting from Kent State University and a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting from Cleveland Institute of Art.
