Good Vibrations by C.J. Shelton
An acrylic and mixed media piece on canvas that really speaks to being "in this together".
36"H x 36"W x 2"D, unframed with sides painted as shown
"This piece, “Good Vibrations”, was a collaborative effort between myself and visitors to my studio during the Alton Mill’s Fire & Ice Festival in 2019. After prepping the canvas with several layers of multiple colours, I drew random circles and wrote words with a positive vibration at their centre such as “love”, “joy”, “beauty” and “grace”. Once the piece was under way, anyone who came into my studio, adults and children alike, were invited to respond to those words in any way they wished and contribute to the canvas themselves by either writing on it or adding their own pattern to one of the circle designs. This “call and response” approach continued throughout the festival as I spontaneously “replied” to whatever was contributed.
Although completed a year ago, I feel this piece now speaks poignantly of the qualities being tapped into during the Covid 19 pandemic and what we are seeing demonstrated every day by our frontline health care workers. The healing nature of the mandala process, coupled with having been manifested by numerous unrelated people coming together in a co-creative process, really speaks to us being “in this together”.
