Choose (one course) from a number of summer writing labs for youth, generously provided by Connecitcut Writer's Project at Fairfield University!

Connecticut Writing Project-Fairfield hosts Summer Writing Labs for kids located on Fairfield University’s campus in July and early August. These one-week writing seminars are filled with lessons and adventures to encourage young writers to find their voice, embrace literacy and enjoy writing. Below are the CWP Writing workshops offered for summer 2016. Each Lab meets from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday in Canisius Hall on Fairfield University’s campus.

Little Labs for Big Imaginations I & II: Incoming Grades 3 – 5, Session I (July 11-15) and Session II (July 18-22) Returning for its 3rd year, Little Labs provides aspiring young writers with the tools to improve their writing skills. Students and teachers will draw and write throughout campus, taking inspiration from nature, literature, personal experience and each other. Imagination is sparked with discussion, performance, play and above all, the license to be creative.

Universe of Stories – Novel Writing I & II: Incoming Grades 6-12,Session I – Characters Matter (July 18-22) and Session II – Plot Matters (July 25-29) Whether you are an aspiring author or just love to page through illustrated stories, this lab will transform your writing to sketch out and begin a masterful piece whether it’s a literary novel or graphic one. Through workshops and writing exercises, small writers’ groups, and guidance from professional storytellers, young writers in this Lab will take their book proposal from first sentence to first chapter. Students can sign up for one or two weeks, building a writer’s craft.

Digital Communications – Sharing Your Thoughts with the World: Incoming Grades 6-12 **NEW**

Do you aspire to be a journalist, write a blog or host your own social media channel? In this workshop, professional journalists, bloggers and digital talent will teach reporting and writing skills through digital technology. Students will report and share on lifestyle, global or hometown story across platforms, whatever peaks their passions. By the end of the week, students will have published a polished story, video or blog post for the CWP Chronicle or its sister networks.

Project Citizen ­- Write a Wrong: Incoming Grades 7-12, July 25-29 The world is full of injustice. Happily, the world is also full of writers. For as long as there have been social movements, there have been citizens who have wielded the pen and not the sword in the battle against tyranny, injustice, and oppression. They know that writing is a way to share our human experiences, and that it can also be a powerful motivator. Whatever your issue is—whether big or small, global or local—your writing can change the world. So join us, the rabble-rousers and the rebels with a cause, as we learn to use persuasive techniques to move hearts and minds and challenge the status quo.

A Performance of Words â€“ a Poetry/Playwriting LAB: Incoming Grades 6-12 August 1-5 The art of performance begins with writing, whether it’s the greatest playwrights or the most creative poets. In this workshop, writers will play with words, rethinking the way they engage in oral and staged traditions while exploring language, style, movement and metaphorical ways of knowing.

Writing Your Way Through Sports: Incoming Grades 5-8 **NEW** August 1-5 Do you find yourself daydreaming hitting a grand slam (or insert play here) for your team? Do you wake up each morning eager to learn what games will air on ESPN? From poetry and novels to reporting and commentary, in this workshop students will take their passion for athletics and journey through the genre of sports.

Who Do You Think You Are? The College Essay and Personal Narratives: Incoming Grades 10-12
