Once plentiful in New Zealand, the kākāpō was pushed to the brink of extinction. Today, human intervention has given this unusual parrot a chance to survive, with their numbers triple that of the start of the recovery program. Odd for a parrot, the kākāpō is part of the natural curiosities that make up New Zealand zoology.
