"Lost Mesa" by Wayne Geary

Oil on panel, 48" x 77"

Artist Wayne Geary is pleased to donate two large paintings for the upcoming Grand Staircase-Escalante Partners auction. Since his early backpacking days in the 1970's he has drawn inspiration from the mesas and canyons of southern Utah, especially the labyrinthine canyons of the Escalante River and its tributaries.  This vast yet intimate landscape has had a lasting impact on his art, and has become the primary subject for his paintings.

Wayne has his undergraduate degree in art history, and an MFA degree in painting. He was honored to work as the 2013 Escalante Canyons Art Festival Artist in Residence; last year he was one of the judges for the Festival.. Over the years, he has had an extensive teaching career and has mentored students of all ages. He is known well for his patient and supportive manner in encouraging young artists' success.

Wayne's first painting up for auction is a sweeping view from the top of the Comb Ridge anticline. The second painting depicts an area from a favorite hike on "Lost Mesa” while working with his wife, artist, Louise Fischman, as Artists in Residence at the Navajo Mountain Boarding School.
