These Ixtapa frames were saved on the street just before trash day in Santa Clara.

At the start of this re-envisioning process, most of us had been primarily working from home for over the last year. Once we started our zoom calls on our concept for the piece, we found our minds running, and areas overlapped on thoughts.

We are inspired on encouraging inclusion, play, diversity, and functionality. We thought of childhood toys, stitched lanyards, spinning tops, and going back to the basics with the color wheel. We chose to keep the frames in tack and cut two smaller arc arms on each chair. This allowed us to play with the weave variations and come up with strategies that we have not seen used before on these frames. Having three chairs, we have each chair painted, red, yellow, and blue. We chose a tweed textile to work with a palette inspired by Piet Mondrian’s work. The roping strategy on each chair varies different body types, but stays consistent with using tension for support with the 3/16” poly rope. One chair may provide more side and arm support, while another chair allows more flexibility on the sides, while providing more lumbar and sit support.

We’re excited that everyone who sits on the chairs, is drawn to a different one for comfort, aesthetics, and personal preference.
