Protector of the Sea

Gourd, hand-dyed fabric, beads

9"H x 20" W

Protector of the Sea, is a fantasy of the spirit of Protection for all flowing water. I hand-dyed fabric in ocean colors and pinned them onto a gourd to resemble flowing waves. I free-formed the old Protector's face from a modeling compound, giving him a look of ancient wisdom. There are small crystals and beads attached to his "waves" that are water drops and he carries a token sea turtle on his headdress, symbolic of carrying all the life of the sea.

My reason for participating in this event is twofold. First, bringing attention to the importance of water to all life is critical. Secondly, the importance of organizations that promote education relative to water and issues such as conservation, is so worthy of support.  My hope is that this event will provide Project WET with funds to continue its wonderful work.
