11. "Party Animals: Homage to Eli Halpin" by Pam Spielberg

Eleven years ago, this artist had a 30 percent chance of surviving esophageal cancer. Among the many life lessons she learned is to make parties part of your life plan.

2009 was a blur, filled with complicated, painful procedures and surgeries, and a hazy knowledge that the odds for survival were not in her favor. But, she says, “I wasn’t ready to die yet. I fought hard. With the help of some amazing physicians and clinicians and the support of my wonderful family and friends, I’m here, eleven years later.” Pam’s umbrella was inspired by Eli Halpin, whose work celebrates the joys of living together, the sacredness of food, friendship, and family, and sharing the cycle of life and death.
